Day -1: The adventure starts

April 12th, 2011 7 comments

Technically, there is one day left before my plane departs Los Angeles – precisely 25 hours, 4 minutes, and 2 seconds (anyone willing to make bets on the departure time accuracy?). While on a long drive back from the Monterey Bay area this weekend, I realized that the adventure had actually already started. After all, one doesn’t have to leave the country to do something adventurous. For me, this adventure involved a weekend of contra dancing with complete strangers at the Queer Contra Dance Camp in Aptos, California. Well, they were complete strangers for only about 30 minutes because once I started walking around the camp, every single person I met was friendly, open, and welcoming (am I repeating myself?).

The camp site was beautifully-located in a redwood forest area overlooking northern Monterey Bay.

I won’t go into details about the whole event because, frankly, I’m too tired and brain dead to communicate it well. I’ll just say that the live music from KGB combined with fantastic callers and dance partners taught me that I can have a whole lot of fun with music that I didn’t even know I liked and people that I know almost nothing about except that we share one interest in common, contra dancing.

Sorry – no more pictures of the dances themselves because I reviewed the pictures I took and they were either of the wonderful redwoods in the camp area or of the Saturday night sea-themed dress-up contra dance and since I like to maintain anonymity of the innocent, I won’t publicly post the pictures of pirates, sailor, sea mermaids, outrageous hats, fun outfits, frilly skirts, beautiful man in a corset, and, yes, even a drag queen dancing contra and English country dances. I guess you just had to be there…
